She walks into the home with a kind of purpose but it’s all display. She doesn’t go to parties like this. She’s used to being at home, drinking coffee and watching documentaries and music videos. But she spots a girl with a tattoo on her skull and can’t look away, the perfection of the girl is based completely around the bareness of her soul, hair cut off and lax style to her. So she sits next to her, staring at the bits of hair growing back through the snakes that wind amongst the flowers, as beautiful as the snake deadly. Self expression beyond her years. She can’t stop staring, she’s beautiful and elegant but against the wall is her girlfriend. Staring at the competition. Running her hands against the tore fishnets, she does go to parties like these. She takes more narcotics than vitamins and gives off the vibe of a predator, raw in her aggression. So she backs off, a quiet pride in her that she had brought out a jealousy in that of someone she would consider to be so far above her.

When I think back on my years of high school I am honestly surprised I do not know someone who has committed suicide. Everyone I know has battled depression whether they have done so through an eating disorder, or cutting themselves, or drinking until they can’t feel, or crying themselves to sleep every night, or breaking things and getting mad. Everyone has gone through something and I think it’s ridiculous to blame it on puberty. That’s what it gets put down to, puberty. “Oh, they are transitioning to adults.” I’m not saying that the process of becoming an adult physical creates a chemical strain on us but that they put our issues down to something so minimal and refuse to acknowledge the deep hurt and pain we go through in high school. I think it would be wrong and naive of me to say that they don’t understand because it’s harder for us, hell my Mum didn’t have the best high school herself and has been battling depression and anxiety her whole life feeling like she will never live up to her own expectations of life and when she does thinks that her hopes were moronic. But I think it’s safe to say that it is at least different for us. We’re told that we are the future and it has created this obsession with us, we obsess over what will be, what is becoming more stressful because ‘what if it doesn’t get us to this future place of bliss?’ I’m not even done with my HSC tests but I have cookware, a vacuum cleaner, a dinning room table and an abundance of sheets for when I move to Melbourne in September with my friend to attend JMC Academy trying to receive my Bachelor of Fine Arts ( Film & Television ). I haven’t got into the uni, I don’t know if I’ll be able to get a job, hell I don’t even know if I will do well enough in my HSC to get an ATAR worthy of the school, worthy of any school but I’m ready for this moment that could possible becoming non-existent in a moment. And this constant worry for our future sets us back, we break down and can no longer contemplate anything beyond getting through today because today is what is killing us. Today is the day I make breakfast, I clean the dishes, I back boxes to move away, I study for my tests, I remember to eat dinner, I get sick because eating dinner makes me feel fat, I resist the urge to purge, I make myself a smoothie ( it has alcohol in it ), I get on tumblr and the world hits me with NY and with all these things we need to fix. We need to fix racism, homophobia, culture illiteracy of any kind and we have to make sure we understand our government, what policies each party stands for and what they are doing for our country. And it’s so hard. It’s so hard. And we’re all doing it, we’re pushing through all these thoughts that go through our heads like we’re pushing through sand up to our necks and honestly it’s as physically painful. It’s not just these issues with our mind that are getting sick but in turn our bodies. I get stressed and my mouth is soon coated in ulcers and I can’t eat anything by icy poles and cold mash potatoes. If I look up to anyone in the world it is the people that I went to high school with, that I watched suffer alongside me. The boys that came on facebook drunk and told me their dad had hit them that night, the girls that didn’t eat lunch because when they went to Valley Girl all they had were sizes 4 through 8, the kids that cried in the library because they failed that test that brought their ATAR down so they couldn’t be a doctor, the kids that cut because they thought they deserves it, the kids that took pills because crying on the floor of their bedroom was just too painful to take one more day, the kids that lost their parents and dealt with everyone asking them if they were okay but most of all anyone that looked in the mirror before they went to school and told themselves ‘it’s just 8 hours’ because they knew it was up to themselves to get through it all. Your family can stand by you, your friends can stand by you but in the end it is you who decides who you are. High school is over for me, it would be delusion to think that my pain ended when I graduated but I don’t think it’s delusional to think that it caused more hurt and ache than I care to endure again.
